A common condition that can occur in pups as well as in humans is osteoarthritis (OA). Since May is Arthritis Awareness Month, I’m partnering with Zoetis Petcare to share information on the condition and make sure more pet owners are aware of the signs to look out for.
Essentially, osteoarthritis is the long-term deterioration of the cartilage surrounding the joints, and around 37% of dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds experience this at some point in their lifetime.1 As you can imagine, it can be extremely painful, but luckily, it can be managed!
The first step is recognizing the signs, which can include stiffness, lameness and decreased activity. This can also manifest into moaning or aching from pain, restless sleep, lagging behind on walks and other unusual behavior. My pups bring so much joy and happiness into my life, so it’s very important for me to keep them as healthy as I can, including making sure they’re getting good exercise, eating food that contain the proper nutrients, and maintaining a healthy weight. Now that I know the signs of OA, I can also protect Belle and Ella by working with their vet to manage the condition if they were to exhibit any of the signs. After all, a healthy pup is a happy pup!
